Living Savvy Episode #13: How to look ahead & choose what you want

An important part of the life coaching process, and absolutely essential to the 5 steps to Living Savvy, is time to reflect.

That means looking back on what we’ve tried, celebrating what worked, acknowledging what didn’t, and taking that valuable information forward to apply to our lives.

In this episode Cat, Vicky and Karen ask themselves: What’s next? How do I focus on what I want? How far ahead should I plan my life?

How to build a vision that you can work towards…

It’s very common for people to have difficulty answering the question, “What do you want?” If you’re having trouble building a vision of what you want in the future, try asking yourself the question, “What do I know I don’t want?”

This list usually writes itself pretty quickly! The kind of job you don’t want, the kind of people who don’t contribute to a happy, healthy life for you, the kind places you really don’t want to live, the kind of person you don’t want to be…

However, you can’t work effectively towards what you don’t want. So use the exercise as a window, a stepping stone, to start imagining what you do want. Everything you’ve stated in the negative, flip to the positive and observe your gut reaction to it.

Then when you start thinking about how you can achieve your goals, focus on those things that you can control and manage, rather than dwelling on those things that are unpredictable and out of your control. This is the power of taking small steps – fine tuning the ordinary to live extraordinary.

What can you learn from this conversation?

  • Knowing what you don’t want is the first step to focusing on what you do.
  • Recognise what is important to you and make those things a regular part of your life.
  • Stop waiting for the ‘perfect moment’ when you’ll be able to get your dream – take action and make it happen.
